Programs
Primary & Kindergarten
The
primary program is for children ages 3-6 and includes
kindergarten. Children still in preschool (3-4 year olds)
are welcome to attend for either half of the day (morning
or afternoon) or stay for the full day. Kindergarten age
children remain the full day. In the morning, the kindergarten
students benefit from the multi-age grouping while still
doing work appropriate for them as individuals. In the
afternoon, the kindergarten students attend their own
class where they do journaling, have chapter books read
to them, and explore culture and science in greater depth
while continuing to work with the Montessori materials.
Each
of our programs are based on the same essential principles,
which are adapted to each age group in ways that are developmentally
appropriate. Each principle is followed by a description
of how it relates to the primary level.
Solid
Approach - A time tested approach consistent
with
the principles of the American Montessori Society.
Respect
- Warm, and inviting classroom environments
where children are treated with respect.
Individualized
Attention - Low teacher-to-child ratios
that assure each child is guided through the curriculum
to his/her potential and receives many individual and
small group lessons each day.
Extensive
Curriculum - Exposure in the formative
years to a broad range of foundational knowledge in culture,
geography and science using concrete methods that provide
“hooks in the brain” for all future learning.
Specialized
Materials - Hands-on materials that bring
abstract concepts alive and help children to fully understand
ideas in a deep and meaningful way.
Multi-Age
Grouping - A community of learners that
mentor, inspire and learn from one another.
Challenging
- High standards emphasizing opportunities
for children to experience personal pride and feelings
of self- worth associated with working independently and
for their own purposes, following through, and producing
exceptional work.
Life
Skills - The opportunity to choose work,
to stay with work for uninterrupted periods of time and
to repeat activities - all of which are essential to the
development of self- direction, attention span and concentration.
Service
- Emphasis on community service and making
a positive contribution to others.
Social
Skills - Active instruction in peacemaking,
conflict resolution strategies and respect for others.
Outdoor
Classrooms - Outdoor
classrooms and gardens with a specialized teacher.
Field
Trips - Field trips and guest speakers
which enhance the extensive curriculum.
