Programs
Elementary
The
elementary program is typically divided into two age groupings:
lower elementary (1st through 3rd grade) and upper elementary
(4th and 5th grade). Each of our programs are based on
the same essential principles, which are adapted to each
age group in ways that are developmentally appropriate.
Each principle is followed by a description of how it
relates to the elementary level.
Solid
Approach - A balanced and sequential
program which builds on itself and is based on proven
teaching methods.
Respect
- A personal approach in a small and supportive
environment, where students know they are respected and
valued as individuals and where they feel empowered to
express themselves, explore and take chances.
Individualized
Attention - Small group or individual
lessons which allow the teacher to truly guide and support
each student, maximizing his/her potential.
Extensive
Curriculum - An integrated curriculum
of broad and fascinating knowledge in science, history
and geography that is taught from an early age and revisited
in greater and more challenging depth each year.
Specialized
Materials - Hands-on materials that bring
abstract concepts alive and help children to fully understand
ideas in a deep and meaningful way.
Multi-Age
Grouping - Encourages cooperation over
competition and allows children to advance to higher levels
without the hindrance of relating grade level to academics.
Challenging
- An intellectually challenging and stimulating
program for even the most able student.
Life
Skills - A structural framework which
provides opportunities for students to gain life skills
such as personal responsibility, organizational skills,
self-direction and the ability to work well with others.
Service
- Emphasis on community service and making
a positive contribution to others.
Outdoor
Classrooms - Gardens
extend the science curriculum.
Field
Trips - Our school believes in the importance
of enhanced learning by experiencing the world first hand.
Therefore, school field trips are a regular part of our
curriculum. The older students typically take annual class
trips to places such as the ones to Catalina Island Marine
Institute, Shakespeare Festival in Utah and San Diego
Wild Animal Park.
Mastery
Learning - High standards for mastery
which require that students work with a subject until
they are truly ready to move on.
Technology
- Use of technology, including computers,
which support all curricular areas.
