Music

By starting music at age three and continuing through their FMS years, our students receive a sustained education in music that builds the cumulative knowledge and abilities that distinguish an educated individual.  The curriculum encompasses rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expressive qualities through singing, recorder playing, instrument accompaniment, drumming, creative movement and the composer listening program.  Solfege (do, re, mi) is taught to develop sight-singing and notation skills.  Students learn to play with an entire ensemble of Orff instuments, which enables them to own their music and become an ensemble.

With separate curriculums for Primary, Elementary and Middle school; students develop their skills accordingly. Primary students’ curriculum incorporates finger plays, unpitched instrument playing, singing, body percussion, steady beat, tempos and dynamics.

As music is performance based, classes will be performing either in the winter or spring, with more opportunities given through choir and the annual Broadway play.
